New Organic Certification Mark

The Australian Organic Mark is now available for use, and according to OS&S CEO Marg Will, this new logo will give greater access for Australian Organic produce around the world.
"This logo is designed to have the same function as the USDA NOP Seal,
and other organic logos, like the EU logo
" says Marg.

"It will identify products that are compliant to the Australian National Standards and will also form the basis for future negotiations for equivalency with other countries for market access for Australian Organic produce".

The Mark was actually designed by Marg and Queensland Beef Producer Kellie Smith, and represents a gum leaf.  "The Mark is registered under the ACCC as a Certification Trade Mark" says Marg, "and cannot directly reference the words Australia, so designing was difficult.  We hope that, much like the Nike "swoosh" that the Mark will come to signify much more than the actual design, once an advertising campaign commences".

The Mark was initiated by the Organic Industry Standards and Certification Council (OISCC), of which Marg is Secretariat, and is owned and administered by OISCC, for use with existing certification logos.

Marg worked closely with Simone Tully, Co-Chair of The Organic Federation of Australia (OFA) to get the mark introduced, and accepted under the Government processes.

Because the Mark is registered as a CTM, its use is governed by the provisions of The Consumer Law (2010), and any mis-use is able to be prosecuted by the ACCC in the High Court of Australia.
"This gives this Mark powers for prosecution under both Australian legislation, and civil proceedings, making the process highly robust, something the Australian Organic Industry hasn't had in the past" according to Marg.  "The likelihood of any potential fraud in the marketplace is now reduced, thanks to this Mark".  The Mark is free to use and available from organic certification bodies now.

It is still difficult for Australian agribusiness products to gain

Mainland China Market Access

In general, it is easier for processed foods and wine to access the market. Chinese certification systems and foreign organic certification systems are not mutually recognised. Organic products that have not been certified by China or products that have only been certified by an overseas organic certifying body cannot be labelled as ‘organic’ or ‘in-conversion to organic’ or other labelling terms claiming to be organic.
In order to ensure the quality of imported organic products and to reinforce the regulation on organic produce, Chinese authorities have advised they will verify consignments in accordance with the New Certification Regulations on Domestic Organic Products.

Chinese Import Procedures for Organic Products

If imported products are declared as organic or imported products are found at inspection to be labelled as ‘organic’ on their packages, labels, instructions or promotion materials; import verification shall apply which includes:
  • verification of the certificate and logo
  • consistency evaluation between the product and its label
  • determination of whether the product logo used is within the product scope
  • for single and multiple entries, verification of the quantity identified on the certificate
  • determination of compliance of any dual logo requirements.
A Chinese organic certificate can be verified using China’s Food and Agriculture Products Certification Information System.
